Oil Skimmer :
Star trace has developed disc type cost effective oil skimmers for removing floating tramp oil from machine tool coolant tanks. The disc driven by double reduction worm geared motor and the disc is partially submerged in the soluble coolant. As it rotates, the disc picks up tramp oil from the coolant surface. The disc turnes past a scraper which removes the oil from the disc. The oil skimmers are available in 300 and 500 mm disc sizes.

A prime consideration in its advanced engineering design has been high capacity, improved metallurgical performance and highest availability. The separator is constructed as a separate unit consisting of drum with magnet yoke, tank and drive package, all mounted on a heavy-duty frame. The design of the frame allows any number of units to be connected in series as multi-stage installation. This design offers a flexible flow sheet layout. (Silica separator) the drum shell is made of non-magnetic stainless steel with abrasion-resistant wear cover and sealed heads of cast rigid aluminium alloy. The drum shaft runs in spherical, self-aligning antifriction bearings.

Adjustment of magnet yoke and drum:
(Silica separator) the magnet yoke is mounted on the stationary drum shaft and its position can be adjusted (+/-35) by a lever at the end of the drum shaft to optimize runing conditions in accordance with tank design and type of ore. The gap between tank and drum, which determines the pulp  flow speed, can be adjusted vertically by shims inserted under the bearing housing and shaft support. Horizontal adjustment is by slotted holes.

Mixer consists of twin drums with two counter rotating rotors and specifically angled paddles. The rotors overlap in the centre of the mixer and the paddles completely sweep the bottom and mix all the material at the same time. Sedimentation
Sedimentation is a process water treatment generally follows a step of chemical coagulation and flocculation, which allows grouping particles together into flocs of a bigger size. This increases the settling speed of suspended solids and allows settling colloids.

Sedimentation is often used as a primary stage in modern waste water treatment plant, reducing the content of suspended solids as well as the pollutant embedded in the suspended solids. Due to the large amount of reagent necessary to treat  wastewater, preliminary chemical coagulation and flocculation are generally not used, remaining suspended solids being reduced by following stages of the system. However, coagulation and flocculation can be used for building a compact treatment plant, or for further  polishing of the treated water.

In the Activated Sludge treatment process, flocs being created through biological activity are collected in sedimentation tanks, generally referred to as Secondary Clarifiers or Secondary Sedimentation Tanks.

Sedimentation tanks can be of different shapes, often rectangular or circular. They are sized in order to have an optimal sedimentation speed. If sedimentation speed is too high, most particles will not have sufficient time to settle, and will be carried with the treated water. If the speed is too low, the tanks will be of an excessive size.

These structures work in two ways:

• They provide a very large surface area onto which particles may fall and become stabilized.  
• Because flow is temporarily accelerated between the plates and then immediately slows down, this helps to aggregate very fine particles that can settle as the flow exits the plates.

The use of these separators may allow the use of a smaller sedimentation tank and may enable finer particles to be separated. Typically such structures are used for difficult-to-treat waters, especially those containing colloidal materials.
